Four Friends, Ten Days and Twenty Unforgettable Experiences – Part 3

The final installment of our lucky traveler’s trip starts in Cape Town and finishes with what South Africa is most famous for, going on safari.

Cape Town impressed with its funky bars and restaurants and laid back atmosphere.  It has an LA style and a Bondi attitude that we fell in love with. The shopping was good… really good, and we gave Zara a good work over, dropping half a pay cheque and coming home with a new wardrobe.

A definite must do, hire a convertible and take to the open coastal road, the scenery is stunning and it’s the best way to see Cape Town.  The Atlantic Seaboard drive that we took is apparently where close to 70 per cent of the world’s car commercials are filmed. Scarves and big sunglasses are recommended for that Thelma and Louise feel.

The last leg of our trip, and the unanimous highlight, was our visit to Shamwari Game Reserve. Safari was something that had been long been on all of our bucket lists and the experience completely exceeded all expectations. Each game drive had us sitting on the edge of our seats like excited kids after too much sugar. That was until we found ourselves surrounded by a herd of elephants no further than arm’s length away.

Getting up close and personal with nature certainly doesn’t mean ‘slumming it’ on safari. The afternoon game drive included a sunset snack break of tasty biltong and local wines and the lush villas left you wanting nothing more. Going to sleep listening to the sound of lions roaring is a pretty amazing experience too. In what must have been the most fantastic case of beginners luck, we managed to see all of the Big Five (the lion, rhino, leopard, buffalo and elephant) in our two day visit. That’s certainly a massive tick for the bucket list!

South Africa surprised us in so many more ways than one. It is much cheaper and a lot safer than we had imagined and it’s not all just about safari, there are so many beautiful things to see and exciting things to do. We enjoyed crazy adrenaline pumping experiences, followed by world class luxury, often in the same place just hours apart.

Do yourself a favour and add South Africa to your bucket list!
